Nickelodeon’s Turtle Power
It has been a long journey to become the ultimate “Turtle Power” brand, and yesterday Kevin Eastman, co-creator, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” original series, and Rich Magallanes, senior vice president, animation, current series, Nickelodeon discussed the latest chapter of this powerhouse brand to kick off Brand Licensing Europe and its Keynote. Eastman says that the key challenge in updating the series was “to be respectful to the original series while also being cool and relevant for a modern audience, but the important word here is ‘relevant.’” The series launched on Nickelodeon in September in the U.S. with the U.K. launch following immediately after on Oct. 1.

Discovery Swims Off with TRU
Discovery Enterprises International’s EMEA toy partner, WOW Stuff, has secured a global toy exclusive with Toys ‘R’ Us for the Animal Planetbranded Killer Whale Orca Air Swimmers. The product will be stocked in more than 1,000 stores across the U.S., Canada, Spain, France, Germany and Australia. Additional SKUs are set to round out the range. WOW Stuff will also look to extend the range into key categories for launch beginning in 2013.
‘Tickety Toc’ Grows Program
Zodiak Kids is expanding the newly launched “Tickety Toc,” and has appointed a new licensee and agent for the Nick Jr. preschool series. Cooneen & Miserli will launch a range of nightwear and underwear based on the show’s characters Tommy and Tallulah in the U.K. and Eire. Zodiak has also appointed Fusion as agent in Australia and New Zealand.
Disney’s Cars Drives On
Disney’s Cars is ready to speed off with a cross-category range of Silver Series products. The new line will have a new and engaging back story, which is set to be unveiled in a special Silver Series edition magazine featuring characters from the Disney/Pixar Cars and Cars 2 films. Mattel has been tapped to develop die-cast Cars models for the boy’s range, and include double Ransburg Zamak metallic paint. “The Cars franchise has strongly delivered in global retail sales, and with a wealth of new content and regularly refreshed product ranges, the success is set to continue,” says Marianthi O’Dwyer, vice president of licensing and publishing, The Walt Disney Company U.K. and Ireland. “We’re excited to be introducing Planes, the world above Cars, with a new feature film next August. Both vehicles align so well with boys’ play patterns and we’re excited about seeing ranges for Cars and Planes on many Christmas wish lists in 2013.
